On the practical level, truckloads of topsoil were brought in to make a planting base 18 inches deep over the existing well-draining sand and gravel. But in the first year, the more Deacon watered the garden, the worse the plants looked. He was baffled. He knew the soil was good and the drainage superb; he top-dressed with leaf mould and compost to suppress weeds and keep the soil moist. Nothing seemed to work.
