In the centre of the Gravel Garden is a rusted iron bar that marks the spot of a future sundial. This bar is actually positioned on the axis, figuratively pinning the area to the alignment of the garden as a whole. At the end of the Gravel Garden is a gate in the deer fence. A line of tall ornamental grasses that actually edge the pond are visible but don?t obscure the meadow beyond. Four junipers planted in a line in the meadow continue the axis, but the path out of the Gravel Garden actually skirts the meadow, rejoining the axis path and continuing up to the woods and the oculus (a round opening in the trees).
Drought-tolerant plants set in gravel create the loose, arid feeling Deacon desired. A rusted iron bar marks the spot for a future sundial.
