Everything was removed except for major trees, some tall pines and a Russian olive at the rear of the property; one corner containing a flowering crab-apple, a corkscrew hazel and a Japanese maple was left untouched.

?We had a wonderful time considering materials that would link the indoors and outdoors,? says the homeowner. One strong transitional element was already in place: a wall of grey limestone that extends from inside to the outside. ?The pleasure I derive from looking at this thing can?t be overstated,? she says. Her objection to it during the renovation is still cause for embarrassment.
