Leslye, I have fed the birds in winter for years, and while squirrels still dazzle me with their adaptability to every challenge, I have found that hanging feeders are the hardest for them to handle. I have a metal pole (with a baffle) topped by two crossbars forming 4 arms from which to hang a variety of feeders -- including a suet feeder for the downy woodpecker. The squirrels get the spillage, but as long as I have the pole placed far enough away from any launch sites (trees, trellis, etc.) onlt the most acrobatic make it onto the pole itself.

Change of topic: Is there any way to keep squirrels out of the suet and bird feeders? Or shall I just give up and let them eat? They are so greedy, however! I have tried baffles, cayenne pepper, moth balls and greasing the poles. Nothing works.

Frustrated... Leslye

Hey Marjorie,
A clothes swap -- what a great idea! And it's in the Distillery District,so King and Parliament, am I right?
See you there. And the best of luck with the book.
Cheers,
