Born in Wales, Parker went to art school and trained as a sculptor, which explains the feeling you get when visiting his garden: it?s like being inside a three-dimensional art form. The collecting bug, however, was acquired almost by happenstance. The willow collection, for instance, started when he bought one from a Quebec plant collector. Parker fell in love with it and started hunting for more. He will try any plant and, even if it isn?t successful, he?ll want to know more about it and the research begins (his collection of books is just as significant as the plants they document). ?You?ll look at a plant and say, ?I?d like that one and this one,? and suddenly you find yourself with a collection,? he says.
