On the north side there is a border combination of perennials and shrubs, which have strong mounding forms and year-round appeal. Among the shrubs on the property are Viburnum burkwoodii, whose white clustered blooms in spring fill the air with fragrance; Spiraea japonica ?Goldflame?, which has bright yellow-green foliage echoing the honey locust near the house; and Daphne x burkwoodii ?Somerset?, another knockout fragrant spring bloomer. Almost hidden in the shrubs is a small pond surrounded by the large, puckered, blue-green leaves of Hosta sieboldiana (another of Howe?s plant legacies).
