More recently, a weedy old Norway maple that impeded the view was replaced by a smaller, shapelier paperbark maple. A glowing hedge of ?Goldflame? spirea banding the deck puts on a spectacular display of magenta flowers every summer. Red-leafed rose and bridal wreath spirea anchor the kidney-shaped beds, and two ?Diabolo? purple ninebarks frame the entry from the patio to the deck.

?I like using shrubs as hosts for vines because they are so unexpected,? says Deborah. ?The mugo pine has been a wonderful host to annual morning glories as well as ?Lady Bird Johnson? clematis, which has gorgeous seedheads right into December.? The vigorous viticella clematis ?Alba Luxurians?, with its delicate, green- tinted white flowers, climbs through each red-leafed rose, continuing the show long after the roses? pink flowers are gone.
