One of the Smiths? other great pleasures is opening the garden for special tours and showing people the new plants they?ve scoured the country for. They see the garden as both a form of exercise and a solace. ?Our busy lives are grounded in the garden,? Rick says. They love to do a Friday walkabout, martinis in hand, discussing the garden and revelling in the pleasure of what they?ve created.

No rest for these wicked plantaholics, though?there?s always a wish list of must-have specimens awaiting Deborah and Rick?s next excellent plant-hunting adventure.

The Smiths? garden will be open July 19 for the St. Andrews by-the-Sea Garden Club Garden Tour.
